What to check when hiring for startup ui/ux design
A useful startup partner should fit the product stage and the team’s next decision, whether that is validating a concept, shaping an MVP, or improving a live product. Ask for examples with a comparable stage, a named agency role, and clear evidence of what reached users.
Questions to put in the brief
- Does the agency work at your current stage: concept, MVP, or live product?
- Which assumptions will the team test before committing to a build?
- Who from your company must make decisions and provide user access?
- What files, knowledge, and follow-up support will you own at handoff?
Evidence to compare
Compare stage and scope, not startup branding alone. Request an example that shows how the agency reduced uncertainty, what it delivered, how founders or engineers participated, and whether the work helped a team decide what to build next.
A common evidence gap
A fast visual sprint may be useful for a concept but insufficient for a product with existing users and operational needs. Make the expected learning and delivery outcome explicit in the brief.
